ProductPersian Radif Workshops 1 (Aug/Sept 2021)

This workshop will cover the key melodic content of the Radif of traditional Persian art music. We will study the melodic development of a few of the most important melodies present in each of the Persian modes (Dastgah) to give an overview of the most important melodic features of the Radif.

The Radif is essential to be studied by all students of Persian music.

All instrumentalists or composers are welcome, however it would be beneficial to use an instrument with microtonal capability.

I’ll be demonstrating phrase by phrase some of the key “gushe” in the radif that highlight the most important melodic developments for each dastgah/avaz. I’ll be analyzing the gushe I choose. I will be choosing several key gushe from each dastgah.

By the end you’ll have a better understanding of how to interpret the written radif and how to replicate the essence of the melody on your instrument.

It will be an overview of the whole radif. We’ll discuss briefly how these melodic themes can be used in improvisation/composition.

Students will not be required to play during the lectures. Everyone will be muted so that you are free to emulate the melodies with me together as your guide. You may unmute when asking questions.
