The Mistake I Made in Oud Playing
Do you know what a shredder is?
That kid who comes into the Guitar shop and picks up the first electric guitar he sees and just shreds all the time?
No one wants to listen to a shredder all the time.
Well, I was like that with the Oud…
Two or three years into learning the Oud, all I knew how to do was tremolo. I would apply tremolo to everything I could. It was the only thing I knew how to apply to my Oud playing to satisfy my desire to make my music sound full and enjoyable.
When playing for friends and family, they would stop listening after a while and start talking because everything I played sounded the same.
I felt frustrated that my Oud playing wasn’t keeping their attention.
Fastforward 8 years
When I play the Oud…
my mom sings along with my music…
my friends start to move their body to the music…
I appreciate the aesthetic beauty of my own playing…
